Study Abroad in Australia

A complete guide to universities, visas, costs, and student life in Australia — from Melbourne to Sydney to the Gold Coast.

Why study in Australia?

Australia pairs some of the world's top-ranked universities with one of the most laid-back lifestyles anywhere. You'll study in English from day one, in cities constantly ranked among the world's most liveable — Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane lead the way. Think world-class campuses, incredible brunch culture, beaches and national parks on your doorstep, and a famously welcoming, safety-first society.

Top universities

  • University of Melbourne — ranked #13 in the world (QS 2026), Australia's highest.
  • University of Sydney — ranked #18 in the world (QS 2026), in the heart of the harbour city.
  • UNSW Sydney — ranked #19 in the world (QS 2026), a powerhouse in engineering and tech.
  • The Australian National University (ANU) — Canberra, strong across the sciences and policy.
  • Monash University — Melbourne, one of the largest and most international campuses in Australia.

Six Australian universities sit in the QS top 50, and every course is taught entirely in English — no separate language track needed.

Visas: the Student Visa (subclass 500)

To study full-time in Australia you need the Student Visa (subclass 500). Your institution sends a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) after you accept your offer; you apply online (ImmiAccount), show proof of funds, English, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), and typically receive a decision in 4–8 weeks. You must also meet the Genuine Student (GS) requirement — explaining your study intentions and why Australia.

As a 500-visa holder you can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks.

Cost of living

Students typically budget US$1,300–$2,600 per month (AUD 2,000–4,000):

  • Housing: US$700–1,400 (shared rentals, dorms, studios)
  • Food: US$300–600 (cafés, groceries, cooking at home)
  • Transport: US$80–150 (concession passes, free CBD trams)
  • Activities: US$120–250
  • Health insurance (OSHC): US$50–90
  • Phone & internet: US$25–50

Student life

Australia is safe, sunny, and relaxed. Study at a campus with beach views, meet friends over brunch and flat whites, and spend weekends surfing, hiking, or road-tripping along the coast. International students are a huge and celebrated part of university life across the country.
