Study Abroad in Singapore

A complete guide to universities, visas, costs, and student life in Singapore — the English-speaking gateway to Asia.

Why study in Singapore?

Singapore packs one of the world's best education systems into one of its smallest countries. English is the language of instruction at every university — including NUS and NTU, both ranked in the world's top 15 — and the city-state is famous for safety, efficiency, and an unrivalled mix of cultures. Add hawker food, weekend flights to the rest of Southeast Asia, and a job market you can graduate straight into, and it's easy to see why students choose Singapore.

Top universities

  • National University of Singapore (NUS) — ranked #1 in Asia (QS Asia 2026) and #8 in the world (QS 2026).
  • Nanyang Technological University (NTU) — ranked #15 in the world (QS 2026), a leader in engineering and tech.
  • Singapore Management University (SMU) — a top business and economics school in the heart of the city.
  • Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) — design-centric engineering founded with MIT.

Every one of them teaches 100% in English, so there's no separate language track to worry about.

Visas: the Student's Pass (STP)

To study full-time in Singapore you need a Student's Pass (STP), issued by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). After you're accepted, your university files the application through the SOLAR+ e-service. Processing typically takes 2–6 weeks (as little as a week for public universities). You'll receive an In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter first, then complete formalities in Singapore to get your digital pass.

STP holders can work up to 16 hours a week during term and full-time during vacations under MOM's Work Pass Exemption.

Cost of living

Students typically budget US$1,025–$2,280 per month (S$1,300–S$2,900):

  • Housing: US$500–1,200 (dorms, HDB rooms, private studios)
  • Food: US$300–600 (hawker meals from US$2.50)
  • Transport: US$60–100 (MRT/bus monthly pass)
  • Activities: US$100–250
  • Health insurance: US$40–80
  • Phone & internet: US$25–50

Student life

Singapore is one of the safest, cleanest, most convenient cities on Earth. Eat Michelin-quality chicken rice at a hawker center for under US$2.50, study with a view of Marina Bay, and fly to Bali, Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur for a long weekend. You'll study alongside students from more than 100 countries.
